Kota Kinabalu: The two classes at SMK Abdul Rahim II in Kudat that were temporarily closed last Thursday when a teacher there contracted the Influenza A (H1N1) virus reopened, Monday.
State Education Director, Datuk Normah Gagoh said those under quarantine are still observing the directive from health authorities.
"I was made to understand the classes have resumed," she told Daily Express. According to her, the classes were ordered shut after the 24-year-old teacher who spent a 17-day vacation in Istanbul developed flu symptoms after he returned.
Earlier reports stated that the teacher returned from Turkey on June 18 and resumed teaching on June 22. He began to show signs of the flu the following day and went for treatment at the Kudat Hospital before he was referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) where he was confirmed positive for the H1N1 virus on June 24.
Following that, 125 students and teachers in the school were placed under house quarantine. The number of schools nationwide closed due to the disease remained at four, involving 2,300 students, teachers and staff members.
The number of students involved in the closure of classes including in SMK Abdul Rahim II, stood at 625.
Last Friday also saw the son of Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Peter Pang En Yin contracting the virus upon returning from Melbourne, which is among the most badly affected areas in the world.
The Minister immediately imposed self-quarantine on his family as a precautionary measure.
